Sunderland are now ready to make a late move for AS Roma star Matias Soule, as we enter the final stages of the summer transfer window.
The Black Cats remain keen on strengthening their attack, with a deal for Marseille star Igor Paixao also close, but the Brazilian’s primary position is left-wing, whereas Soule is more used to playing on the right or through the middle.
Ben Mattinson‘s comments about the Roma attacker suggest he is a player that will get fans out of their seats, saying: “Soule is just generally a really entertaining player to watch. He plays with flair and a level of confidence that’s so engaging. The Argentine has an inevitability about him – he always is looking to make something happen & when he has the ball in certain areas, he will.”
That was certainly the case on plenty of occasions last season, with the 23-year-old picking up six goals and five assists in 33 Serie A appearances, while he also amassed four goal involvements in eight matches in the Europa League.
With Regis Le Bris‘ side set to take part in the same competition this season, they could do with bringing in players who have already proven themselves in Europe, which means the Argentinian fits the bill.

Sunderland ready to make late move for Matias Soule
According to a report from Corriere della Sera (via Sport Witness), Sunderland are now ready to make a late offer for Soule, as they hold a concrete interest in signing the Roma attacker.
The Black Cats are willing to take the Serie A star on loan initially, with an obligation to buy included in the agreement, and the Italian side would be hoping to receive around €35m (£30m).
Sporting director Florent Ghisolfi is well-aware of the South American’s abilities, as he was the one that took him to AS Roma from Juventus back in 2024, and he could play a key role when it comes to getting a deal over the line.
Talks were held with Soule’s agent way back in July, at which point Fulham also made contact, and Alvaro Arbeloa’s side could provide late competition in the race for his signature, as they are also ready to make a move.
However, Sunderland will be hoping Ghisolfi will give them the edge, as they look to make a statement signing before the transfer deadline on Tuesday.
