Serie A top scorer named as Tottenham target despite De Zerbi’s glowing Solanke verdict

Tottenham Hotspur have set out to sign a new striker, despite Roberto De Zerbi praising Dominic Solanke for his most recent performance.

Things are finally starting to click for Spurs, who have won their last three matches on the spin in the Premier League, with the most recent victory coming at home against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Tottenham strolled to a relatively comfortable 2-0 victory, following Jean-Philippe Mateta’s dismissal before the 15-minute mark, with Archie Gray opening the scoring in the second half, before Jan Paul van Hecke secured all three points.

De Zerbi had to rely on his defenders to provide the goals, and Solanke has scored just one goal in nine Premier League matches this season, with Omar Marmoush also getting on the scoresheet just once in eight outings.

Despite the duo failing to find the net against the Eagles, De Zerbi praised their performance, saying: “Marmoush, Solanke, very well, especially when we lost the ball. So it’s a clear signal that they were inside of the game.”

That said, considering Richarlison has been frozen out, with the Brazilian failing to make an appearance since the 3-0 defeat against Brentford on the opening day, it may be important for Spurs to improve their attacking options in January or the summer transfer window.

Monza's Gustavo Varela

As such, Tottenham have now entered the race to sign Monza striker Gustavo Varela, who could be a stellar addition to the squad, considering he is the leading goalscorer in the Serie A this season.

Indeed, it has been a fantastic debut season for the Monza star, and he is starting to attract plenty of interest from the Premier League, with Chelsea, Newcastle United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Brentford and Fulham also watching him in action at the weekend.

The 21-year-old bagged his ninth goal of the season in a 2-1 defeat at Bologna, while he has also delivered against the likes of Inter Milan and Napoli, earning plaudits from scout Jacek Kulig in the process.

Considering Solanke and Marmoush haven’t exactly been prolific so far this season, it is no surprise Tottenham remain keen on signing a new striker, and Varela’s performances in the Serie A suggest he could be the ideal addition.
